This butter keeper is an old European design. The lid compartment has slanted sides, which will hold the butter securely. A small amount of cold water kept in the bottom of the bowl helps keep the butter at the perfect temperature for serving. It is necessary for the water level to touch the bottom of the server. Soften butter just enough to compact tightly into butter compartment. The lid can be inverted to lie flat for serving.
