I sketched this in early autumn just as the aspen and maples had turned into a blaze of color. These hues always fill me with a sense of visual excitement. This complete hillside was a collage of colors and textures. A band of pines higher on the hill created a nice contrast against the golden amber of the aspen foliage. The sun shown unimpeded causing dark shadows among the trees and making the foreground grasses appear almost bleached of color.
